The Last Game: Steph Houghton

Steph Houghton was a legend of women’s football long before she’d even thought about hanging up her boots. For years she captained teams through the early days of the women’s game to the explosive growth we’ve seen more recently. It was only fitting that Manchester City would follow their captain in the run-up to her final-ever game and capture the emotional send-off she deserved.

After ten years at Manchester City, one WSL title, three Women’s FA Cups and four WSL Cups Houghton announced that she was ready to retire at the end of the 2023/24 season. This 20-minute film captures moments from the gym, to the pitch as she prepares for City’s final game of the season, Aston Villa.

It was a game that saw her captain her team for the last time and underlined what a huge miss she’ll be both as a player and voice on and off the pitch.
